How French people REALLY talk about the weather - french tutor in Paris

As a French tutor in Paris, I hear a lot « c’est chaud » every single day with my beginner students.

That’s actually wrong, in french we don’t use the verb « être » to say « it’s hot » but we use the verb « faire » (same for « froid »)

Correct way : « il fait chaud » = it’s hot

Here some basic sentences :

• Il fait froid

• Il fait beau

• Il pleut

• Il neige

The weather is often the first excuse to start a conversation in French or anywhere else…

If you live in France, you should know French people complain A LOT about the weather so it’s important to learn these sentences, so let see more.

When it’s cold, you can say :

• Il caille (very common, quite familiar)

• Il fait un froid de canard

• On se gèle 👉 Not just cold. The cold is freezing

Now when the air is hot , You can say :

• Il fait lourd (very commun)

• On étouffe

• Il fait une chaleur de dingue

When the weather is bad, you can say :

• Il fait trop moche

• Il fait un temps pourri

• Il fait un vrai temps de merde ( very familiar, but very real)
