How to Learn French as an Expat in Paris : 7 Tips That Actually Work

Moving to Paris is exciting but let's be honest, speaking French in real life is a completely different experience from taking a class back home. As a native French tutor in Paris, I've been helping expats navigate this challenge since 2015. Here are my top 7 tips to learn French faster when you're living in Paris.

1. Speak from Day One — Even If It's Imperfect

The biggest mistake I see with expats in Paris is waiting until they feel "ready" to speak. Spoiler: that moment never comes! Start speaking French in small situations, at the boulangerie, at the café, at the market. Locals appreciate the effort, even if your accent isn't perfect yet.

2. Learn the French of Everyday Life, Not Just Grammar

Textbooks teach you correct French. Parisians speak a different French, full of slang, shortcuts, and cultural references. A good French tutor in Paris will teach you both. Think: "c'est quoi ça?", "t'as pas vu...?", "ça marche" instead of the formal versions you find in textbooks.

3. Use Paris as Your Classroom

Paris is one of the most stimulating French immersion environments in the world. Use it! One of my favourite methods is the Walk & Talk lesson , we walk through a Parisian neighbourhood (Montmartre, Marais, Bastille...) and practice conversation in real-life situations. It's one of the most effective , and enjoyable , ways to make French stick.

4. Find a Native French Tutor (Not Just an App)

Apps like BUSUU are a great supplement, but they can't replace real conversation with a native speaker. A private French tutor in Paris can correct your pronunciation in real time, adapt to your level and goals, and give you the exact vocabulary you need for your daily life in Paris , whether you're working, socialising, or navigating French administration.

5. Commit to a Regular Schedule

Consistency beats intensity every time. Two lessons per week for three months will take you much further than an intensive week and then nothing. Even 30 minutes of conversation practice daily makes a huge difference over time.

6. Immerse Yourself in French Culture

Watch French TV series (Call My Agent / "Dix pour cent" is perfect for expats!), listen to French podcasts, read a free French newspaper like 20 Minutes. The more you surround yourself with French, the faster your brain adapts. Bonus: attend cultural events, French meetups, or even a wine tasting lesson to practice in a relaxed setting.

7. Don't Be Afraid of Making Mistakes

Mistakes are how you learn, full stop. In all my private French lessons in Paris, I encourage my students to make mistakes, because it means they're trying. The fastest progress I see is always with students who speak without fear, even when they get things wrong.

Ready to Start Your French Journey in Paris?

Whether you've just moved to Paris or you've been here for a while and want to finally feel confident speaking French, I'd love to help. I offer private French lessons in Paris (near Montmartre) and online, as well as group conversation classes, Walk & Talk tours, and a unique French + Wine Tasting experience.
